Once a Guardian reaches level 40, any experience earned goes to acquiring a Mote of Light. One Mote of Light requires about 80,000 experience. Motes can also be awarded randomly for completing Crucible matches, completing Vanguard Strikes, in loot chests, in rare engrams, dismantling rare armor and weapons or finishing a Public Event with gold ranking.
