Lullus (sometimes called Lul) (c. 710 - 16 October 784) was the Bishop of Mainz from 754 until 781 then the Archbishop of Mainz from 781 until 784, and the Abbot of Hersfeld from c. 769 until 784. Lullus was born in Wessex, and was a monk in the Benedictine abbey of Malmesbury in Wiltshire. In Rome in 737 he became acquainted with Boniface, and joined his mission to Christianise Germany. Lullus began by reorganising the church in Franconia, and stayed in the Abbey of Fritzlar. In 740 Boniface rose Lullus to a deacon, and was again promoted to a priest by him in 747. In 752 he was made a bishop. In 754 when Boniface died in Frisia, Lullus was recognised as his successor in Germany, and King Pepin the Short the following year appointed him the Bishop of Mainz.
