He played junior hockey for the Toronto Marlboros from 1957 to 1959. Begg then joined the Michigan Tech Huskies of the NCAA, helping the team to its first national title in 1962. In 1963 Begg joined the Canada national ice hockey team and remained with them until 1969 when he retired. He played in the 1964 and 1968 Olympics, winning a bronze medal in the latter.
