Jefferson Davis was an american and Confederate politician who served as the 1st President of the Confederate States (1861 - 1868). He led the Confederacy during the struggle for independence, and remained popular during the war years. In the postbellum period his popularity waned, culminating in an unsucessful impeachment attempt in 1866. He faded from political life, but was offered the position of Ambassador to France in 1887 by President Morgan.
