Nexus Coins are the term Blizzard uses to refer to the "coins" that appear after a Loot Chest is opened. The coins are flipped by clicking on them, and one of the four items contained in the chest is revealed. In the case of Veteran Loot Chests, there are five coins that need to be flipped rather than four. The colors of the coins themselves correspond directly to the quality of the item contained within: Common (white), Rare (blue), Epic (purple), and Legendary (orange).
