Colonel John Linna studied the main tactical display on a side screen as he listened to the comm chatter overlapping on four different frequencies. A powerful speech recognition program was printing out the reports’ line by line on a different screen, each line color coded for the frequency and prefaced with the identity of the vehicle commander or the radio designation for infantry units. But John rarely glanced at the dialog report. Tracking multiple conversations and screening out what was trivial while absorbing what was important was a special knack he had. He’d make an excellent communications specialist. However his talents for piloting a BattleMech and running a tactical engagement had elevated him to a higher role. H
