In 1929 he married Sophie M Gambazzi. He was a Knight of St Gregory and a founding member of the London Labour Party. He was a member of Southwark Borough Council, serving as Mayor of Southwark for 1954-55. From 1946 he was a member of the London County Council representing Southwark Central until 1949. Following boundary changes he represented the new division of Southwark from 1949 until the county council's abolition in 1965. He was Vice Chairman of the London County Council for 1960 – 1961.
