The Band of Gypsys (sometimes referred to as The Band of Gypsys or A Band of Gypsys; sometimes misspelled as Band of Gypsies or Band of Gipsies) was a band comprising guitarist/singer/songwriter Jimi Hendrix, drummer/singer/songwriter Buddy Miles and bassist/backing vocalist Billy Cox. Formed in New York in October 1969 after the breakup of Gypsy Sun and Rainbows, the Band was active for almost four months. After 4 sold out live performances at the Fillmore East, 2 shows each night, December 31st, 1969 and January 1st, 1970, and 1 disasterous performance at Madison Square Garden, Buddy Miles, though his contractual obligations had been met and was not employed by Hendrix at the time, was "fired" by Jimi's managment, and Band of Gypsys was disolved.
