The Edge Worlds are the most remote systems in the Sirius Sector that are available for the player to explore. These systems are referred to as the "Edge Worlds" because they represent the far edge of the explored part of the Sirius Sector. Other terms to describe such regions of space in science fiction include "Fringe Worlds", "the Rim", "the Frontier", etc.
