The 1998 Bud Shootout was a Winston Cup (now Sprint Cup) exhibition race for the 1997 pole winners run on February 8 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach Florida. Jeff Gordon dominated all race long, leading 15 of 25 laps. However, a late caution set up a last-lap restart, with Gordon leading followed by Rusty Wallace. When the race restarted, Gordon missed a shift and stripped his transmission trying to recover. This allowed Wallace to blow by, leading only the final lap en route to his first Shootout victory, taking the checkered flag over his brother Kenny.
