The Handles were an Otokodate of heimin war­riors who served as "unofficial" deputies in the Lion city of Tonfajutsen, working together with samurai magistrates. They were quite profi­cient in the use of tonfa, the peasant weapon from which the city garnered its name, and also gave the name of the group.
