Lancing was the act of puncturing a boil to drain the collected fluid. In 2268, Spock stated that while he was confident Doctor Leonard McCoy had the expertise to lance a boil or remove a splinter, replacing the Vulcan's brain in his skull was another matter altogether. (TOS: "Spock's Brain" )
