Potter is the surname of an old wizarding family. The main branch of the family were once pure-bloods, but James Potter married Muggle-born witch Lily Evans, thus their sons, Harry, Lancelot and Edward are half-bloods. Every member of the Potter Family - by blood - had been sorted into Gryffindor house at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry since it was founded in 993AD; the family is very wealthy - only behind the Malfoys, Blacks and Lestranges - with a vault at Gringotts Wizarding Bank containing a great deal of gold and a large Manor.
