A Friendly Adult Presence, sometimes abbreviated FAP, is an adult at a gathering or event comprised mainly of minors for the purposes of legality and safety, but who does not participate in the activities or leadership of said group. In contrast is an adult leader, who is present for legality and safety as a Friendly Adult Presence, but also controls and/or directs the group. An example of an adult leader is a Boy Scout Scoutmaster. Typically, a Friendly Adult Presence must be included by the organization's insurance, which generally demands that a background check is carried out.
