The first people to inhabit what is now the US were the native inhabitants who arrived when low sea levels allowed crossing into North America in foot over what is now Alaska. The first Europeans in North America were Vikings in the age of Leif Erikson, although they may not have made it more southerly than southern Canada. The first European to definitively set foot on what is now US soil was Ponce de Leon in what is now St. Augustine, Florida.
