The Afghan Civil War took place from March 1994 to November 1995 between the communist government of Afghanistan and the Islamic Jihadist groups of the Mujahideen. The war started after a protest by Majahideen protestors turned violent on March 9. The Soviet Union, being a strong ally of the communist government of Afghanistan began aiding the country in the time of the civil war. The Soviet General Secretary Gennady Yanayev publicly supported the Afghan government after a terrorist attack on a Soviet outpost in the Tajik SSR killing 25 Soviets. The tensions of the Cold War between the United States and Soviet Union heated up ever so slightly as no one in the west took a real caring for the Soviet intervention. The United States did support the Majahideen forces, however.
