The Panama Canal Zone is an American overseas territory established by the United States for construction of the Panama Canal. Established in 1903, the city of Balboa was designated as the capital of the territory in 1904, and has remained in the position since then. In 2011, following the declarion of the Syrian War for Independence, the United States declared that the Panama Canal shall not be used by Turkish ships until the war is finished.
