A bubble study, or more properly an agitated saline contrast test is a procedure that can be performed as part of an echocardiogram. Saline is prepared by mixing it back and forth between two syringes to create small bubbles. The saline is then injected into a vein. During the echocardiogram, the bubbles will be visible and the physicians can see if they follow the normal blood flow pathways.
