On November 6, 1869, Rutgers and Princeton played the first college football soccer game using modified London Football Association rules. Over the next 7 years, rugby gained favor with the major eastern schools over soccer, and modern football began to develop from rugby. Walter Camp is known as the father of American football. The first rules of American football were written in 1876 at the Massasoit convention.
