On a very windy day in the Smurf Village, Vanity is busy admiring himself in a big mirror in his house when he accidentally shatters it. He quickly goes to his dresser to pull out his hand mirror to continue his gazing when the door of his house opens, breaking that mirror as well. He goes outside to tell Papa Smurf about what just happened, and as Papa Smurf rises from the tree he was sitting under, he bangs his head against a branch and knocks a bunch of bad apples down from the tree. He suspects something is wrong and goes to his laboratory to look through his books to find out what it is, why they're starting to have a run of bad luck.
