The LoH is the civilian counterpart of the Colonial Cross (CC) and the highest gallantry award for civilians as well as for military personnel in actions which are not in the face of the enemy or for which purely military honours would not normally be granted. However, the CC is higher in the order of wear and would be worn first by an individual who had been awarded both decorations. It is awarded in two grades: The first is awarded with a blue ribbon and white stars, which signifies the first bestowment of the award. The second and highest grade of the award is the Red Legion of Honour, which is awarded with a red ribbon and gold stars, and signifies a second award of the medal. Depending on the wearer's preference, it is worn either around the neck or on the chest.
