Josh Cooper was the son of Colonel Fredrick Cooper, a Marine set to deploy to Iraq but things took a turn for the worse when both father and son were caught in an explosion at the golf course with the resulting explosion killing Colonel Cooper while Josh survived with minor injuries. Josh attempted to leave school and join the Marines to avenge his father's murder but NCIS Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo talked him out of doing so.
