The Hollowfication Virus is an odd virus that can be made in several ways, such as by the Hogyoku, or by slaying several powerful Hollows (usually Gillian Class Menos) and condensing their reitsu into a liquid form that eventually crystalizes and turns into a power that contains the virus. Once the virus enters a Spiritual Body, they begin to undergo Hollowfication, the speed of the process deterimined by their reitsu (the strong their reitsu, the slower the process takes). For regular soul, they almost instantly begin to turn into regular Hollows.
