Fred was a guest at the wedding of Gordon Davies and Joan Walker in 1961. Overbearing and talkative, he outstayed his welcome at the Rovers Return Inn after the reception, entertaining landlords Jack and Annie Walker long after the other guests had left. Though they quickly tired of his anecdotes, the Walkers put up with him because they thought he was a relative of Gordon's, owing to Gordon calling him Uncle Fred, but as he finally made to leave he told them he was just a friend of the family. The character was credited as Uncle Fred.
