Many Hobbits from both Bywater and Hobbiton frequently came here to drink and socialize with one another. One of its usual patrons was Hamfast Gamgee, also known as "the Gaffer". The Ivy Bush was where the Gaffer explained Frodo Baggins' history and connection to Bilbo Baggins, as well as described Bilbo's return to the Shire after his adventure.
