Some people believe her name is derived from the mythical "merrow", which is the Gaelic equivalent of a mermaid. "Loof" from Middle English, Old English, and Scots luif means "palm of the hand", but one of the meanings in Proto-German is "oar blade" or "paddle", which would make more sense with her occupation being a "pirate".
