Seyg-El, also known in various versions as Jor-El I, is the father of Jor-El II as well as Zor-El and Nim-El and the former head of the Kryptonian Council. He's Superman and Supergirl's grandfather. In Smallville, it has been stated that Jor-El does have a father and that he sent his son (Jor-El, as a young man) to Earth as a right of passage, in other words as a punishment. Little is known about Jor-El's father, but we do know that he was the leader of the Science Council, until his death then his son Jor-El took control over the council.
