In the 2280s decade, Lawlor was a trainee, assigned to the Federation starship USS Enterprise-A under the tutelage of chief engineer Captain Montgomery Scott, who was demonstrating to Lawlor how to modify the new Enterprise to match the superior condition of the ship's predecessor in the name.
