Olt's younger brother Dann advised him for centuries until Olt decided to begin the tradition of the annual Gifting, which was a ritual happening every Midsummer Eve involving killing young people and sacrificing them so that Olt may live longer. Dann, who did not approve of what Olt was doing, gathered up his followers and left with them to found the walled city of Weld. 7 years after these events, Olt is killed during the second Gifting when Rye saves his friends and brother from being sacrificed to Olt, using the Sorcerer Dann's magic.
