The mega-lazer was a piece of fictional technology mentioned in the literature of Captain Proton. When the Captain Proton stories were created in the 20th century, the description of this technology was an example of science fiction. (ST - Captain Proton: Defender of the Earth short story: "The City of the Future") Presumably this was a play on a description of lasers, which was very much an emergent technology at the time the Captain Proton stories are said to have been written.
