Hyobe was the owner of the House of the Steadfast Oak, the most popular geisha house in Rengai Mura. Hyobe seemed a portly, affable man, locally famous for refusing to accept money from magistrates, keepers of the law. He secretely provided a number of illicit services, including opium and gambling.
