In 2284, the Republic was commanded by Fleet Captain Sufik. That year, the vessel served as the flagship for the Starfleet War College tactical exercise Operation: Tactical Encounters XXVI. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update) It is not known if this is the training ship used by 24th century Starfleet cadets, as noted in the DS9 episode: "Valiant".
