Hiruko, a missing ninja of Konoha, places a Puppet Master Jutsu on Kakashi in an attempt to take his Sharingan for himself. Knowing this is going to happen, Tsunade places a seal on Kakashi which will automatically activate Kamui should Hiruko try to absorb him, killing them both. Naruto and the team attempt to save Kakashi from this fate, leading to most of the movie.
