If you are talking about the battle in Phase 34 - Nightmare, Shinn splits the bottom half and the top half of the Impulse, causing Freedom to fly through it, and then either detonates one of the pieces or shoots him from behind. It's not really clear. But you can see blue bits of the HiMAT wings fly off in the explosion.
