It was originally formed in 1871 as the garrison defending Hiroshima. It was most notable for being one of the oldest divisions in service with the Imperial Japanese Army. Furthermore, the 5th Division was also notable for being trained in amphibious tactics and being equipped with motor vehicles. The division itself was disbanded in 1945 in the Dutch East Indies after surrendering to the Allies.
