According to stories told by sailors, Old Ruse was considered one of the wonders of the area. It boasted a natural, protected harbour and from the Fear Narrows was reached via a narrow channel which opened into the cove. Its entrance was guarded by towers on either side. The shores of the cove were lined with wharves, slips and docks above which rose the town's stone buildings which were hewn out of the cliffs.
