The Obelisk of Power was the prison of Voltrix, which had been sealed in a crypt and cast adrift in deep space in Hiverspace millions of years ago, only to be encountered by Sanctuary during its journey. When the colony ship recovered the crypt containing the Obelisk, a Demarian scientist named Silverstripes accidentally released Voltrix and became possessed by him. Voltrix then tried to enslave the colony vessel on his way to conquering the universe.
