Phwarxong Shan is the tallest and most famous mountain peak in Lxungion. It was first ascended on 19 February 1491 by Lxung musician Jap Jangke. It was later utilized as a strategic high point, most notably for the Sukdoi Rebellion in 1979. During the socialist era in Lxungion, it and the surrounding area were used as a military base for the Lxung Red Army. Thun Jicnasjo used it as his military capital, and stayed there most of his time in power.
