The Jarvey publication was an offshoot of the Irish Cyclist which was published by a firm named Kyle & Mecredy in Dublin. Percy French had been an occasional contributor to the Irish Cyclist and when his position with the Irish Board of Works as an engineer on a drainage scheme in Co. Cavan came to an end he approached Mecredy for a permanent post with the Irish Cyclist magazine. Mecredy said he could do better for French and gave him the editorship of a new comic journal, The Jarvey. The Jarvey is also the name of the Percy French Society newsletter, currently edited by Berrie O'Neill.
