Essentially, an explosive shaped charge is placed behind a cone of metal, like copper. Upon detonation, the metal cone is turned into a high speed projectile of superheated molten metal, capable of piercing the heaviest armor. Placement of the devices can vary the angle of attack to obtain the best penetration of the target, whether vertical, horizontal, or at an angle.
