The Canadian 2 dollar coin was introduced on February 19, 1996 by Public Works minister Diane Marleau. The Toonie is a bi-metallic coin which bears an image of a polar bear on the reverse, once proposing the coin to be named as Bearie. The coin is referred to as a "Toonie" due to the play on words of the $1 coin named a "Loonie".
