The 2.26 Incident (二・二六事件, Ni-niroku jiken), in February 1929 brought the Kaitakusha Tōhōkai (Settler Society of the East) to power with the military support of the Kōdōha (Imperial Way Faction). The Kōdōha wanted a military representative on the throne. Emperor Hirohito abdictated due to ill health in favor of his uncle in law Asaka Yasuhiko. Asaka took the Imperial name Kaitakusha to signify the Kaitakusha Jidai or Settler Age. In Japan he was commonly called Emperor Kaitakusha , while in the rest of the world he was known as Emperor Asaka Yasuhiko. Asaka created an unprecedented Emperor worship cult around himself and was worshiped as the Supreme Deity of the Shinto religion.
