Kyōshi was born to a pair of civilians living in the Land of Frost a couple of years prior to the Fourth Shinobi World War. Until the advent of the aforementioned war, Kyōshi grew up in peace with his parents and grandfather in a small village located on the southern coast of the country. Like many of the civilians the Takamori family was relocated to Konohagakure when the nation was identified to be a likely location for combat. More specifically, the family were taken into the Konoe household, to whom Kyōshi was distantly related through his maternal line.
