The Maoli (Chinese: 貓狸, or wild cat) is a soft-launched vertical missile launcher (VLS) designed by Daqing. The system supports anti-air, anti-submarine, anti-surface, strike warfare, ship defense and self-defense capabilities at once. It is designed to eject the missile slightly at an angle relative to the deck, so that if the rocket motor fails to ignite, it will land not on the deck, but in the ocean. This has not, however, happened outside of tests. The system is based on an eight-cell launch module, usually incorporating six or eight modules in a magazine, along with a Launch Control Unit.
