Doctor Sigmund is a Dutch comics character created by Peter de Wit for daily Newspaper De Volkskrant. His name derives from Sigmund Freud. Sigmund first appeared in 1992, two years before his actual debut, in an educational series about the art of drawing comic strips. De Wit (assisted by longtime collaborator Hanco Kolk) dedicated one episode to short gag-strips varying from two frames to one page and revealed that he had designed a United States-influenced newspaper comic under the working title Mensch, durf te leeven (ancient Dutch for Life, be in it). Sigmund is a cynical, one-eyed psychiatrist; his patients hate him, but he doesn't seem to care about that.
