The Cooks Brook & District Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1963. Initially equipped with a portable pump and hose, the department didn't get its first truck (a reconditioned milk tanker) until 1971. In 1996, it and the other fire departments of Halifax County were amalgamated to form the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service.
