Highway 39 starts at a junction with Highway 97, just northeast of McLeod Lake. It goes north to the town of Mackenzie, about one quarter of the way through its entire route. It then finishes its route to the north, stopping at Williston Lake. En route to the lake, the highway goes through Heather-Dina Provincial Park.
