Oh was wrongly said to have been born in Japan, due to his career playing Japanese characters. He was born in Mokpo, South Korea. He emigrated with his family to America when he was a teenager. Oh attended high school at Gwangju, South Korea and attended Yonsei University in Seoul, the University of Southern California, and later received a MFA from UCLA.
