Buried deep in the body of every Specialist, a killswitch is a tiny silicon device implanted by Specialist makers to ensure that those Specialists that malfunction can be put down with a minimum of effort. This is accomplished by releasing a chemical in the Specialist's bloodstream that kills them within seconds. Controlled by a remote radio controller, both the killswitch and the controller have failsafes that trigger the deadly reaction if their inner workings are disturbed. Few rebellious Specialists have actually managed to remove their killswitch because of this sensitivity, and most are content to have possession of their own controller.
