The Sphinx was an armour clad crime boss who plotted revenge against New York's subway system for firing him, intending to detonate explosives strategically placed throughout the tunnels. He was ultimately killed when, while battling the Blue Beetle, a flamethrower meant to kill the hero instead heated the Sphinx's bulletproof suit to the point of melting his flesh.
